New Mexico’s largest city sits at 5,312 feet elevation, backed by the Sandia Mountains and woven through with the Rio Grande. Desert Drones provides FAA-certified professional drone services across the Albuquerque metro and Central New Mexico, navigating the Class C airspace of Albuquerque Sunport and the restricted zones surrounding Kirtland Air Force Base.
✈ FAA Part 107 Certified | 🛡 $2M Liability Insurance | 🏆 3× Reader’s Choice Winner | 📍 Serving ABQ, Santa Fe & Rio Rancho
Albuquerque’s commercial drone market has historically been underserved — many operators in New Mexico lack the FAA Part 107 credentials, commercial insurance, and professional editing capabilities that construction, real estate, and government clients require. Desert Drones brings the full professional package to Albuquerque: certified pilots, $2 million in liability coverage, and edited deliverables on professional timelines. We handle all FAA Part 107 LAANC coordination for Albuquerque International Sunport Class C airspace and Kirtland AFB restricted zones — so you don’t have to.
Desert Drones schedules regular New Mexico project windows with 48–72 hour lead times for most project types. We serve the full Albuquerque metro — Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, Corrales, and beyond.
Flying near Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque International Sunport, or Double Eagle II Airport requires coordination and experience. We know the TFRs, restricted zones, and LAANC authorization so your project never gets grounded.
From summer monsoon season (June–September) to 100°F+ midday heat — we schedule shoots around Albuquerque’s climate to maximize visibility, battery performance, and shot quality.
From mid-rise construction in Midtown to real estate aerials in the Sandia Foothills, we’ve shot across every corner of Albuquerque. We know which angles work and how to deliver on time.
Albuquerque’s economy is built on construction, real estate, mining, and a growing tech and defense sector — and drone services are in demand across all of them. Whether you’re a home builder documenting progress on a new subdivision in Bernalillo, a commercial real estate broker listing an office complex near Nob Hill, or a solar contractor needing panel inspections in Four Hills, Desert Drones delivers professional aerial solutions on your schedule.
New Mexico’s terrain is one of the most visually striking environments for aerial work — the Sandia, Manzano, and Jemez Mountains create dramatic backdrops that make construction documentation, real estate listings, and marketing videos stand out. We leverage this landscape to give your project imagery that’s not just data, but genuinely compelling content.
Our Albuquerque clients include residential and commercial real estate brokers, construction project managers, solar installation companies, mining operations south of Albuquerque, and event organizers at venues like the Albuquerque Convention Center and Tingley Beach. We also serve Bernalillo County government contracts and University of New Mexico–adjacent development projects.
Every job is flown by FAA Part 107 certified pilots with current LAANC authorization where required. We carry $2 million in liability insurance — a requirement for most commercial clients in New Mexico’s construction and real estate sectors.
Albuquerque’s real estate market has grown with in-migration from higher-cost states, Netflix production activity, and Intel’s continued Rio Rancho presence. Aerial photography is increasingly expected for luxury listings in the Northeast Heights, North Valley, and High Desert neighborhoods, and for residential developments in Rio Rancho and the West Side.
Albuquerque and Rio Rancho are in an active construction phase, with Intel’s campus expansions, Mesa del Sol development, new residential communities in Bernalillo County, and commercial development along the I-25 and I-40 corridors. We document progress for GCs and project owners with weekly aerial visits.
New Mexico has become a major film and television production hub — Netflix, AMC, and dozens of studios use Albuquerque-area locations. Production companies need licensed, insured aerial B-roll, location scouting photography, and cinematic drone footage integrated into larger productions.
Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland Air Force Base, and significant federal contracting activity make Albuquerque a substantial government and defense market. Contractors and vendors serving these institutions need properly credentialed, insured drone operators for documentation, inspection, and site survey work.
New Mexico is a significant oil and gas producing state, and the state’s push toward renewable energy has created wind and solar project activity on the Eastern Plains and Rio Grande valley. We serve energy sector clients with aerial inspection, survey, and documentation services for facilities accessible from Albuquerque.

Kirtland AFB occupies the south side of Albuquerque International Sunport and has restricted military airspace that overlaps with the airport’s Class C footprint. Commercial drone operations near Kirtland require strict FAA compliance. Desert Drones does not fly within Kirtland’s restricted areas without proper clearance. For projects located near (but outside) restricted boundaries, we coordinate appropriate authorization before scheduling.
The Sandia Mountain Wilderness area is a federally designated wilderness, and commercial drone operations within wilderness boundaries are prohibited. The eastern portions of Albuquerque adjacent to the Sandia foothills are outside the wilderness boundary and are generally operable with appropriate FAA authorization. The Sandia Mountains themselves and Cibola National Forest wilderness areas are no-fly zones without specific federal permits.
Yes — Desert Drones serves the entire central New Mexico region including Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, Corrales, Placitas, Santa Fe, Edgewood, Moriarty, and Los Lunas. Santa Fe is served regularly for real estate, event, and commercial photography. Rio Rancho has been a particularly active construction market due to Intel’s campus expansions.
New Mexico does not have a state drone permit system, and the City of Albuquerque does not issue drone permits — all commercial drone authorization in Albuquerque is through the FAA (Part 107 certification + LAANC for Sunport airspace). All Desert Drones pilots are FAA Part 107 certified and we obtain all required airspace authorizations before every flight.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (held annually in October) results in major TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) that prohibit drone operations over or near the event area. Desert Drones monitors all active TFRs and does not fly during balloon fiesta TFRs. We recommend planning any Albuquerque drone projects well outside the fiesta period or in areas unaffected by the TFR.
