Commercial drone operations in Tucson require an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate — all Desert Drones pilots are fully certified. Depending on the project location, we may also need LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) airspace authorization, particularly near Tucson International Airport (Class C airspace) or Ryan Field (Class D). We handle all airspace authorization on your behalf — you don’t need to worry about the paperwork.
Davis-Monthan AFB (DM) is located in the southeast part of Tucson and has a Class D airspace surface area extending approximately 4.4 nautical miles from the field. Commercial drone flights within this area require coordination and authorization. Desert Drones is experienced navigating the airspace around DM and works within FAA and military guidelines to obtain proper authorization when projects are located near the base. We do not fly within restricted areas without proper clearance.
Monsoon season in Tucson (typically June through September) brings afternoon thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rapidly changing visibility. We monitor weather conditions closely and schedule flights during the safest windows — typically early morning before convective activity develops. We’ll reschedule at no charge if conditions are unsafe on your shoot day. We do not fly in rain, winds exceeding safe operating limits, or within 5 miles of active lightning.
